Crack Cocaine Addiction
Crack cocaine addiction is prevalent
throughout the United States in people of all
ages and crack addiction contributes to the
growing number of drug treatment admissions
nationwide. This highly addictive drug is inexpensive
and easily accessible, becoming a sufficient
substitute to its more costly counterpart cocaine.
Once a user is involved in crack addiction,
he or she finds that it is almost impossible
to kick the habit alone. Some symptoms experienced
by the crack user include dilated pupils, an
increase in blood pressure and heart rate, hot
and cold flashes, anxiety, sleeplessness and
a decrease in mental clarity.
Crack cocaine addiction and heavy
use of any drug results in medical complications
and problems both mental and physical. Often
friends and family members are confused as to
why after all these complications their loved
one still seeks comfort in a substance that
is so harmful. The fact is crack addiction has
taken over the user's life and it is no longer
a choice: crack has become the user's life.
A person suffering from crack
addiction will find that tolerance for the drug
has increased making it harder to get high or
loaded off of the same amount of drugs. While
crack and crack addiction has predominantly
been associated with people from lower class
backgrounds and has been deemed a habit of the
homeless and poor, crack addiction affects people
from all walks of life. Crack cocaine addiction
does not occur in a particular type, race, or
class of people but can be found in all neighborhoods
and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Crack cocaine addiction is a treatable
illness. Just like all other addictions, crack
cocaine addiction can be treated and cured by
using treatment programs, support groups and
other methods. The first step in recovery from
crack addiction is completing a drug detoxification.
For many crack addicts the hardest part of staying
off drugs is the initial period at which cravings
and withdrawals seem intolerable and doing more
drugs seems like the only way to combat the
pain.
A variety of medical centers offer
detoxification but then let the crack addict
go back out to the streets where the temptation
to engage in crack cocaine addiction is too
hard to handle, most of these people relapse
immediately. Instead crack addicts need to first
detox then begin a program of recovery that
offers day to day solutions and a plan to stay
off crack for good.
